Chris Lehane: Resilience is a Safety Strategy

The more people who can access AI, the better society can navigate the changes it will bring

4 LIKES ∙ 3 RESTACKS

Jory Des Jardins

The social media parallel Chris raises is one I lived. I was on the front lines of that era, helping establish non-exploitative practices for creators and educating brand and technical partners on how to scale responsibly while protecting the people generating value. The system was imperfect. But the alternative — no disclosure frameworks, no worker protections, no norms at all — would have been far worse.

What's different now is the stakes. AI doesn't just reshape commerce or communication; it reshapes cognition. The real risk is organizations adopting AI in ways that hollow out the very human judgment they'll need to evaluate it. That's why "broad access" can't be the whole answer. Access has to be paired with intentional design: frameworks that help people develop alongside AI, not just deploy it.

Resilience, as Chris frames it, is built through participation. I'd add that it also requires architecture.

The AI Lift for New Businesses

AI is making it easier to start and test out small firms

I like the discussion around small business creation and how these tools close the gap around “I have an idea” to execution/launching. I wonder if a good proof point to explore in the future is examples or data on how OpenAI tools help the solo entrepreneurs stay in business and create a meaningful shift in the closure of new ventures.

It certainly could be something to eventually train business owners through the workshops or local in-community sessions.

This is an interesting and well-developed article. I agree that today's AI economics are heavily subsidized and that current pricing models may not survive unchanged.

What I am less convinced by is the assumption that present economics determine future viability. Amazon lost money for years. Uber lost money for years. Entire industries often look uneconomic while infrastructure is being built.

The question is not whether OpenAI is losing money today. It obviously is. The question is whether today's losses are evidence of a broken business model or simply the cost of building something whose economics we do not yet understand.

The "vanilla agent, rich foundation" framing is the part more teams need to hear. Everyone wants to copy the architecture but the real moat is the unified monorepo, annotated tables, and ranking retrieval by trusted queries rather than dumping every historical query in.

The fact that this architecture layer sits on top of an existing dw layer shows that ai will be just another layer to the whole system arch and not going to replace anything.. 'AI first' ideology is falling flat .

Useful resource.

But one thing education will eventually have to separate is:

Prompt quality ≠ learning quality.

A student can write an excellent prompt and still not understand the subject.

The next challenge is not only teaching students how to get better AI outputs.

It's helping them verify, explain, apply, and defend what they learned from those outputs.

That is where real understanding starts.

Thank you for this comprehensive view into the tactics of these AI companies. Here is where European nations can lead the world to reject AI Superintelligence development. Somebody's got to lead and the MAGA US is too enamored with raw power to place any controls on these companies. From your article I am much more aware of these companies' strategies for deflection, empty promises, faux concern while continuing on their one big mission.

Yeah.

A fundamental problem that AI marketeers have is that they must sell to the rest of the world, and that their internal hype makes challenges for them. They would have problems anyway, because the sort of apparent expertise and insular enthusiasm that they have been running on has lost good will in the broader perspective.

I think it is quite likely that OpenAI and Anthropic IPOs could be attempts to bust out, and could fail.

We may be going into a desert where opportunities for business on a speculative basis of Greta-Thunberg-style youthful certainty are concerned, for example. Which may be youthful certainty on my part, and entirely silly.

Dario has the problem that he tried to talk to the federal government without really understanding how the federal government thinks and acts.

Altman was not making that mistake, but in addition to his other problems is closely tied to Microsoft, and maybe almost everyone has an opinion on microsoft, windows 11, and the copilot push.

I'm thinking xAI will be spun off at some point, or else the plan is that orbital data centers will resolve the eternal fast/good/cheap conundrum while charging competitors an eye-watering and nose-bleeding premium. Right now it made sense to bundle and launch. Longer term, up or down, it may make sense to split. I'm neither AI-phile nor -phobe but the (shady) numbers, not to mention lack thereof, lead me to conclude we might be centuries and/or several paradigm shifts away from any commercially-viable LLMs.

Leading to: I coulda bought Tesla when it was around 24 but my dad and I talked ourselves out of it. We learned it was a battery R&D company paying for itself by making cars, were on the fence about the sensibility of that, and missed our moment. That is, xAI is not the thing but again, always, it's Mars. My hunch is that Elon isn't going to trust Mars to another guy's AI.

It's a long shot (lit.) but isn't that his sweet spot?

Delete Doesn't Mean Deleted. Just Ask OpenAI.

A federal judge ordered OpenAI to preserve chats even after people erased them. What that means for everything you've typed into one.

Before grad school I worked at a trust and safety consultancy based in Europe, auditing platforms for compliance with laws like the Digital Services Act. The job taught me to read privacy policies the way a lawyer does, which mostly means scanning for the one sentence that quietly gives everything away. Great post. Curious if you've got any thoughts on the business agreements signed by developers of 'wrappers' and the underlying AI models that power their products. Bound by exclusion clauses for training and validation, the foundation models still might be subject to the same deletion reversal as the direct consumer cases you cite, right?

Excellent analysis. For fundamental investors with a 5-to-10-year horizon, how should we weigh the opportunity set between US AI infrastructure and emerging market equities? Do you view AI as a centralizing force that further concentrates capital in the US or potentially as a catalyst that accelerates growth in regions like LatAm through localized adoption?"

"In space, there are no cooling costs."

It's impossible to take someone who writes this seriously. In space there is no conductive or convective cooling, only radiative, which is is very inefficient, and it certainly is not free. Any investment in SpaceX is obviously a "greater fool" trade. Good luck.

I agree with a lot of this, but the real question is still: who governs the governors?

AI governance sounds good in theory, but institutions are still made of people, incentives, politics, and power struggles.

What makes this piece especially interesting is that OpenAI is no longer talking like a startup. They're starting to sound more like a state-level actor. Thats probably the biggest shift here.

Good piece overall.
