Art is a deliberate and fixed expression of a certain sort of human brain activity. Picasso used lines and fields of color and shapes deliberately, to fix various and sundry expressions of his brain’s activity, to convey what he saw and felt to us. So did John James Audubon, Keith Haring and Johannes Vermeer. And many others.

“While we seek mirth and beauty” is a line from “Hard Times Come No More”, an American parlor song by Stephen Foster that Bob Dylan covered on his 1992 record of songs called Good As I Been To You. Dylan’s work has been good to us, and the world is a better place for that work having been brought to light.
