Ironically, during the Vietnam war, when there was mandatory military conscription (for men), such a system partially existed. Serving in the Peace Corps was an alternative to the military. Teaching in a "disadvantaged" school was a temporary alternative as well. Alas, it all died with the establishment of the all volunteer army.

Absolutely. I often wonder what it would look like to institute and what the outcomes would look like if everyone was required to serve 1-2 years. Apply for what you want (military, Teach for America, resurrected conservation corp, etc), but you must volunteer in “service” of country/community/common good.

I admit that I find it difficult to maintain any optimism at all.
