This is such a great example of what I try to model on my podcast. If you listen to my episode with my daughter Amelia, or the one I had with my girls about social media, you’ll hear how I get them to talk.

The key is to treat them with status and respect and take a genuine interest in what they have to say and the way in which they view the world. They may surprise you; mine do all of the time.

They may say things that worry you. Hold that emotion and wait for it to subside. Let them know that it does worry you and why, and give them a chance to explain their own view.

The thing they want, so desperately, is connection and guidance. The reason they hide their thoughts is because they fear being judged or disappointing you.

Override that instinct in yourself and you’ll have the best relationship you could ever imagine with your teen.
