Why, why, why is there no public backlash? This banal, tacky, vulgar person was elected twice by people enamored with his "style".

Remember "I love the poorly educated"? He feels right at home in their company. They give him their (almost sincere) adulation and he gives them permission to be their worst selves. Every other President in my lifetime at some point called Americans to something higher. He seeks only to distract them for a little while so he can perpetrate his next garish act of grift.

Vulgarity is only the surface symptom. What matters is the disappearance of restraint.
A republic can live with conflict, inequality, partisanship, and even corruption. These are not new features of political life.
