I like the “salad” image rather than “melting pot”. In a salad, each ingredient is separate, distinct, and complements all the other ingredients. In a melting pot, the ingredients tend to blend into one flavor.

I taught English in a school district with many languages, and I enjoyed a different salad with each small group.

As a second generation American I saw my family create the American Dream with as you said, hard work, great food, speaking 3 languages, learn English here. So YES I believe immigrants make this country better.

And to those fucker who don’t, just keep inbreeding and your children won’t be able to tie their shoes or count change; thank god for velcro and a debit card so they will never have to learn.

You’re not the only one. I grew in Tucson in the 50s. Most everyone respected the Hispanic culture because we knew the history of our city and how we were a true melting pot. We studied it in school and were proud of it. I’m back in Tucson in retirement and I am shocked at the attitudes on social media here about brown people who speak Spanish. These people are ignorant newcomers.

If you like food, you need immigrants.

They work on our farms and ranches to produce the food.

They are the itinerant harvesters who travel from Mexico to Canada.

They work the slaughterhouses and meat packing plants.

They deliver the food to the distributors and the supermarkets.

They work in the grocery stores. They work in the restaurants. They work the food trucks.

No immigrants? No food.

I grew up in the southern US in the ‘60’s. The main reason I left was the overt hostility to minorities and/or anyone “different.” It was the right move and I learned a lot about myself and the world as a result.

That is what keeps me from moving to the south. I love their longer growing seasons and more affordable housing, but I cannot deal with their hate.

When I witness cruelty and hate, I can’t just mind my own business. I have to jump in the middle of it and get ugly with them. I wouldn't last long in the south.

Thank you for your comment. I grew up believing we were the greatest nation. Perhaps everyone is told that about their country. The US has lost its integrity. I absolutely love being on the subway in NYC and hearing 5 different languages at once. It’s interesting and fulfilling to meet new people with different cultures. It’s how you grow and enrich your body of knowledge and possibly make new friends 💙

My children are immigrants, adopted from Colombia. My Daughter-in-law and her family are immigrants from Israel. Many of the members of our synagogue are immigrants, as well as Holocaust survivors.

I don't know the exact percentages, but I would probably be not too far off by saying that 60% or more of the people who complain about immigrants are only one or two generations away from immigrant ancestors.

As a teenager, I was fascinated regarding people in other countries and ended up with about 30 pen pals from different countries. I agree with you 100%. I am so proud of my Italian heritage. And thankful. Without immigrants the food in America would be boring and awful…My Spanish speaking neighbors are being targeted and terrorized by ICE. You aren't alone in this. It is ironic that historically Americans have treated immigrants like a threat of some sort. Then evolve into finding them something to embrace Consider the history of the Irish, the Italians, the Chinese, various groups of Eastern Europeans. Immigrants have long made this country fascinating and strong. It is about time we admit that.

I enjoy going to cultural festivals I've been to all kinds. My dad took me to a Buddhist festival when I was in high school and I really enjoyed that. There's a local Japanese Christian church that has a festival and I enjoy going to that although I don't think it's been ongoing since the pandemic. My son has just married one. Beyond my mama abject anxiety for them as they attempt to navigate our inane immigration system under this current regime, I’m so excited for all the culture that he and we get to experience!!!

Our nephew married a wonderful young woman from Mexico, and we love her and her family. Our great-niece and nephew, with their huge brown eyes, are beautiful!

That’s exactly how I feel. Never in all my years have I regarded immigrants as criminal, as a threat to America. The anti-immigrant sentiments and resulting political actions have always seemed bizarre and brutal to me. I believe it’s simply racism pure and simple.

I am married to a Salvadoran woman. It is ethnic eating every day. Including Thanksgiving. Taquitos this year. Arroz con Gondules another year. Always different. We have been together 22 years. I forgotten what the traditional meal is.

Geneva Switzerland and the South of France. We sound rich, but one is a studio and the other slightly larger. Both places are in small villages that touch cities. Life is what is rich.

I’ve taught them for decades.

I like their work ethic.

I’m inspired by the kind, respectful, positive vibe I’ve experienced again and again and again from people who’ve lived through war and all kinds of truly serious hardships and are profoundly grateful to be here.

I like witnessing the eagerness of a room full of immigrants to connect through our shared humanity.

I like the appreciation, respect, & gratitude I’ve always, always, always been given by them.

How many pretentious “white” Americans have had an immigrant ancestor? I am an “old white woman” and I have several who came to this country between 1850 and 1870. They worked and helped to create the business community in their states. They did not cause trouble but gave their blessings to a new life of Freedom. Come On, MAGA. What’s in your background? Should we just LOOK AND SEE?

The main thing I love about immigrants is that they tend to be well-mannered, polite, kind, sensitive, honest, gracious, and sincere. They tend to be more family-oriented, and their children reflect this. There is something much deeper to most of them that seems to be missing in our US culture. Oh, and their English is generally better than ours!

YESSSS!!! I absolutely love learning from others about their homes, their food, their culture, what makes them them. It is one of the most beautiful parts of humanity to me. Every time I hear a story I feel privileged and blessed to be invited into their personal history. It is a gift I will always cherish. The difference between some Americans and immigrants is that an immigrant will almost always welcome you into their home and treat you like family. I wish I could say the same about most Americans. 🫂

And not only that but there are many good people. Crime is not going away with fewer or no immigrants. Mass shooters primarily whites, that’s why no concern but an immigrant involved then all have to go.

I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area. My friends I made over there are from all over the world. Love their food, work ethic, hospitality, and to hear their perspectives on the world. These are absolutely wonderful people! I very much miss that environment! Agreed Mother Mary Bernadette!!

You’re not. My grandparents and great grandparents were both farmers living in south Texas. Every year the same immigrants crossed the Rio Grande to work on their (separate) farms. They were treated well and paid fairly and immigrants in turn were good to my family. My mom only spoke German and the Latino immigrants taught her Spanish as she would help out in the fields with them. When she started school, she spoke no English but was already bilingual. I grew up in KC in a hood mostly Italians and Whites but my 2 brest friends were part Japanese ( mom-Japan; dad-Missouri Ozarks) and another friend was from Ecuador. So, yes-glad they’re here!
