Hold up. This is a wild misread of the AI situation. All of that is currently still available. And nobody is making you use or pay for AI models. The fact that people do pay for AI models is evidence that clearly there is some value they are providing for people.
If you don’t want to use AI, you don’t have to. You can still Google stuff. Which is also another service that does not need to be given out for free.

“You don’t have to use AI” is an illusion. The same way “you don’t have to use a smartphone” but somehow your banking, your local bus company and your parking payment system requires you to download an app.
I believe what we see here is a growing chain of dependency that is less connected to physical reality and public structures we created in the course of history. It is solely dependent on profit-chasing companies we have no control of who can pull the plug any time they want.

We may have built the library, but we cannot retrieve or interpret the books so quickly.
That post perfectly sums up social media today. Platforms take your ideas, images, and content, then turn around and tell you there’s a cost to using it, while also selling ad space on your timeline to others, often showing you content you didn’t ask for. With increasing discussions and even restrictions around teenagers using social media, this might be the right moment to rethink how and with whom we choose to engage as partners on these platforms.

It’s funny but i would agree with Sam Altman IF (and there is a big IF) governments were also rolling out policies to make sure the profits from those AIs went to the individuals losing their jobs due to its existence and not the Sam Altmans of the world, as then they would truly be liberating humanity from menial labor.

Google took away the 100-results on a page, and left you with 20 pages of human crapification with stolen content. Twitter was full of human-stolen content as well. The enshitification happened long before AI.

I was thinking this very thing recently. Do the same Google search you’ve done for years and you get the same information you would expect only it’s all pulled together into one pretty paragraph instead of multiple answers. Nothing new. Just what we already had made pretty. And for this we have people becoming billionaires from it.

If only it was just made prettier. From my experience it's now riddled with falsehoods and ads and search results have become less precise.
Sure a lot of that also has to do with the fact that we are drowning the internet in low quality content.
I respect the frustration in this post. However, all of that original content still exists on the internet. The ability to create new tutorials, projects, and answers remains fully intact. AI has only made this knowledge available in a different form. The people who built it and continue to build it have not been replaced. They can still create.

Accessibility is coming down already through enshittification of search engines and free knowledge is being fought tooth and nail by the big tech companies now: see google's plans for Android (f-droid) and Musk’s agenda against Wikipedia.
There will come a time when all that stuff will be taken from us, if we do not fight for it. Mark my words.
The entirety of the US economy is a subscription now. It’s a rare sight to see a factory actually making tangible products.

That’s the whole capitalist end game. We’re valuable as consumers. I think software companies are soon going to claim that anything you do on their software is their property & they have all rights to it. That’s kind of what they do when your software is no longer supported or if you no longer subscribe to them.

Yes valid point! Another issue is all of this learning was free before and many devs shared their learning via sites like Stack Overflow. This was a dev thing and we did it with pride. AI is causing many not to share and stack overflow reported the least additions in the last year. Scary that our sources are not getting populated with new learnings.

To be clear AI is only worth billions because we live in a brain dead society. OpenAI is valued, supposedly, at close to 1 Trillion dollars. Yet their released financials show they took a loss of 38 Billion this year. They're 96 Billion in debt (and growing, even though most of this debt is on paper situated on the hyperscalers, but they own the infrastructure) with a seperate 180 Billion in “investment” ie. Money people expect “returns” on from this deeply unprofitable company.

Only base models or past versions of Ai are available for free. Most useful ones are locked behind a pay wall. They also used everyone on the planet to train the Ai just to replace them. Amazon is replacing workers with robots. They have self driving delivery vehicles over seas. They even have an Ai actress to pimp out for films cheaper than more actors.

Publicly-available data is a public good/resource. It’s analogous to oil; there’s already an existing model: Alaska Permanent Fund (“Oil”) Dividend. We tax the compute, which provides an easy metric to measure and scales up/down.

I work in contracts/licensing and there’s very much a case to be made for a historic class-action. I think that some of the AI talking heads are trying to get out in front of this by bringing up ideas like population-wide profit sharing, etc.
It is why we are building humma.ai, from an application and a policy perspective.
Wait a few years. AI is stupidly expensive and unprofitable. In its current form it is doomed to die within a few years, maybe sooner.

Open source LLMs are the way.
Free is rarely really free in the internet economy, which is part of the problem. AI (like many new technologies, including Google search back in the day) threw the economic status quo out of whack. It needs realignment, which is something all publishers should participate in doing.
That's WHY those companies incentivized this knowledge creation for the last 20 years.
