The ancient Greek thinker Heraclitus gets credit for the phrase, "Character is destiny.” The idea was that what happens to someone is not based on luck, fate, or the gods, but is a result of their character and the choices that follow.

As an ethics professor, I think this idea is correct.

Nowhere is this statement more obviously true than with our president. HIs character is so fixed, so flawed, so predictably negative in its effects.

I was at the SCOTUS today and was struck by how much the court has lost. The entire system is diminished. When you can predict who wins before the justices announce the outcome just by knowing the identity of the parties, and when 6-3 is the default setting in almost all of the cases, the system is broken.

Perhaps the Court never deserved…
