Machiavelli's Outlier Status

Machiavelli is probably the most famous name in Renaissance political thought, but did you know that he was an outlier? Most political philosophers in Europe at the time actually prescribed a kind of virtue politics, exemplified perfectly by the ideas of Francesco Patrizi of Siena (1413-1494), a governor, bishop, and extremely popular author.
