A Pakistani parent might spend twenty years waking up early, working exhausting hours, sacrificing personal dreams, worrying constantly about their children, and carrying responsibilities heavy enough to bend steel. Then when asked how they feel about their child, they say: “Beta, khana kha liya?” Did you eat?

Ironically, South Asians are surrounded by emotion. We swim in it. We drench ourselves in it, yet we rarely discuss it directly, face to face.
