I Was the Optimist in The AI Doc. Here's Why

Last week, a documentary hit theaters featuring some of the biggest names in AI. Sam Altman. Dario Amodei. Demis Hassabis. Tristan Harris. Eliezer Yudkowsky. Yuval Noah Harari.

And me.

The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist is directed by Daniel Roher (who won the Oscar for Navalny) and produced by the team behind Everything Everywhere All at Once. This is a real film, in real theaters, built for real people. Not just the tech crowd.

In it, I’m positioned as the optimist.

A few people have asked me since: Was that for the cameras? Were you playing a role?

No. And if you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you already know the answer. I’ve been saying this for 25 years.

Technology is the single greatest force for uplifting humanity on this planet. Full stop. It democratizes access. It demonetizes what used to be scarce. It did this with information. It did this with communication. It did this with computing power. And now? It’s about to do it with intelligence itself.

That’s not a small thing. That changes everything.

Now, does that mean there are zero risks? Of course not. The doomers in this film aren’t crazy. Eliezer Yudkowsky’s concerns are serious. Tristan Harris raises real questions that deserve real answers, not hand-waving. And the pace of AI development is outrunning our ability to govern it.

I’ll give you that.

But here’s what I know to be true: every single generation faces a moment like this. Nuclear weapons. The internet. Genetic engineering. Every time, the fear was loud. Every time, the fear was real. And every single time, humanity found a way to use the new tool for more good than harm. Not perfectly. Not without cost. But decisively.

AI will be no different. Except bigger. Faster. And with more upside than anything we’ve ever built.

Let me give you specifics. Within this decade, AI will give every child on Earth access to a personal tutor as good as the best in the world. It will put a diagnostician in every home that rivals the top physicians alive. It will accelerate drug discovery by orders of magnitude. It will collapse the cost of clean energy. It will unlock scientific breakthroughs we literally cannot imagine yet.

That’s not optimism. That’s the data. That’s the trendline. And I’ve spent my career tracking trendlines.

So, if you watched The AI Doc and walked out of the theater unsure what to think… good. The film did its job. It gave you the full picture.

But if you’re looking for someone who has spent decades studying exponential technologies and still believes the future is far brighter than most people think?

You’re in the right place.
