Clinically trained herbalist 🌿 I write about herbs, Human Design, nervous systems, midlife, and the strange lifelong art of becoming yourself. Thoughtful, occasionally sarcastic, and convinced the body is wiser than we've been taught.

Lately I’ve been thinking about these ubiquitous ideals or expectations we hold people to because of what they are interested in.

As an example, as a herbalist people have made some interesting assumptions about me.

That I must love walking barefoot in the garden. Or drink lots of herbal teas. That I’m a vegan or vegetarian.

I’ll let you in on a secret….

I do not like walking barefoot. I hate the feel of things (dirt, crumbs etc.) beneath my feet. It makes me feel like I have ants crawling on my…

The St. John’s are starting to bloom in my garden. Right on cue it seems as we just experienced the Summer Solstice here in the southern hemisphere.

My relationship with this plant is bittersweet in many ways. If it wasn’t for suffering from a second episode of a deep depression I may never have discovered this plant. And without this plant, I wouldn’t have gotten to know myself better.

I try to take the weekends away.

Away from my phone. Away from social media. Away from the constant pull to know what everyone is doing all the time.

This practice keeps me grounded. It keeps me connected to my boys (my son and hubby). But it also gives me something I think we've lost a little of...

The joy of surprise.

Because things happen while you're away.

This morning I opened my Substack to find a whole bunch of new followers, and for a moment it felt a bit like opening a gift.

Yesterday the ladies from my tarot study group were over and we were exploring the themes and archetypes of The Hanged Man card (in the major arcana).

And it got me thinking about this article I just shared a few days ago.

I wonder if what we need a full 180° in the way we look at the future?

Right now a lot of people are worried and scared…

We live in a Snapchat, fast paced, bitcoin entrenched, AI generated, 100 emails a day, both parents work kind of world. And the solution isn’t to ask everyone to abandon everything they know to pick up a pitchfork.

Honeysuckle flower essence helps us stay rooted in the present—especially when nostalgia starts whispering that everything used to be better.

I know a lot of people aren’t happy with the way things are unfolding. But I don’t think the answer is back there somewhere.

I think it’s here. Now. In front of us.

Midlife is this weird and interesting place.

I will admit… I’m not a big fan.

Zero stars. Would not visit again.

Because it makes me very uncomfortable.

It makes me want to retreat into a blanket fort, grab a pint of ice cream, and binge watch Bones.

Because a new version of me is emerging, and I don’t know who she is yet.

I didn’t sleep well last night, and today I can feel how addicted I am to ā€œdoing.ā€

So I’m sitting with some of my very own journal prompts from this article this afternoon.

Last night was rough and today I’m feeling it. And while there is always ā€œstuff to doā€, I’m clearly not going to be productive in my sleep deprived haze.

Yet the pressure remains…

I wore my undefined root pressure like a set of virtual signalling armour for so long! Like being burnout, exhausted and completely overwhelmed was something to be proud of.

And after many years of seeing and supporting clients and students, I know I’m not alone in this.

Check your chart ~ curious, is your root undefined?

For the undefined Root this pressure doesn’t feel neutral or natural because it wasn’t yours to begin with. It’s just something you desperately need/want to get rid of. It distorts the truth of pressure and instead leads into experiences that, if left unchecked, can result in burnout and exhaustion.

It’s almost summer here in the northern hemisphere and everything is waking up.

But I’m just not feeling it yet.

Maybe because the mosquitoes are the size of dinosaurs and the humidity here is oppressive.

Or maybe it’s because we’re nearing the end of our homeschooling year and I am just tired.

But the ā€˜get and go’ vibe that summer is trying to bring in, isn’t quite landing with me yet.

Anyone else feeling this?

If you’ve ever felt…
