That was the 1930s, “…when the huge middle class of America was matriculating in a school for the blind.” I’d ask what we’re having our fingers pressed forcibly down upon, but acres of our National Mall now boarded up and fouled with the machinery and porta potties of Trump's celebration of himself is giving me an answer I don’t want to accept.

“The cities swept about me like dead leaves, leaves that were brightly colored but torn away from the branches.” I couldn’t bring myself to walk past the White House complex again. I didn’t want to see it up close. Like a corpse that you need to mourn without having to see the body.

Then, having breathed in the wisdom and humility that undergirded Jefferson’s contributions to our formation, I stepped into the sunlight and began to descend the marble steps. And there it was. Being constructed on the White House lawn. A gladiatorial arena. Not for anything civic. Not for anything shared. Bread and circuses. A Caesar's birthday celebration of himself, by himself, for himself.

This chapter in American history, this administration, and this president is a reflection of too many of us. Our own vanity, avarice, and malice. Our lack of literacy in favor of reality TV entertainment. Polarization that pretends to be patriotism. We are the audience now, addressed by a narrator who draws the line between the huckster and the artist: “He gives you illusion with the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion.”

This American experiment, in the long course of human history, is something like that. Born imperfect. Named imperfectly. A fumbling attempt to say something true about human dignity and self-governance that became, against all odds, its own irreplaceable thing. Not because it was perfect. Because nothing like it had existed before.
