Padre Island National Seashore
Flowers on the beach.
Jun 10, 2026
A digital getaway on Wednesdays, with a series of photos from specific trails, parks, forests, or towns.
Sunrise along the coast often brings warmth, in the way of new light and vibrant colors painted across the sky. Both familiar personal experiences, visiting beaches along the country’s perimeter.

Those were my only expectations arriving at Padre Island National Seashore on a weekday morning, in the dark, an hour before the sun made an appearance.
Knowing hatching sea turtle nests dotted the beach, I decided to wait until a little light arrived before making my way down to the sand.
I had no idea the dunes would be so brightly decorated with flowers. Forgive my ignorance on this likely well-known reality, but this was my first Gulf Coast visit.

Watching the day wake and illuminate all the greens, yellows, and pinks quickly felt like the highlight for the morning. Until I noticed a sign directing foot traffic further down the beach to watch baby sea turtles making their way into the water.
A uniquely beautiful and unforgettable morning.
