Happy May! The promise of melting snow is on the horizon for higher elevation peaks. Unless, of course, new snow falls instead.

That’s precisely what happened during my first visit to Great Sand Dunes National Park, back in 2013. The evening of my arrival was cold, windy, and awaiting fresh powder. I took a quick peek at the dunes before retreating for the night. The following morning, the mountains were coated in fresh snow and surrounded by blue skies. Perfect for hiking!

Reaching the tallest sand dune required more time and effort than anticipated. Each step in the sand came with a little backwards sliding. Slow, steady movements and a bag full of fresh cookies in my backpack motivated me to the top. The view along the way was breathtaking, too.
