That’s the bisexual condition, I think. Too cool and absolutely panicked. Caught permanently between she’s my friend and wait, is she flirting with me? Fem kindness is indistinguishable from flirtation until it very suddenly isn’t, and by then you’ve already laughed it off and made a self-deprecating joke, and the moment is gone.

You know the best feeling?

When someone reads your article and requotes something you wrote on their substack. It’s such a sweet little gesture of appreciation…

People do not talk enough about how arousing attention itself can become. And no, I am not talking about generic attention. I am talking about that specific attention. The kind where somebody studies you carefully. Notices behavioural patterns. Remembers your weird coffee order. Brings up one throwaway sentence you forgot saying. There is something dangerously intimate about being observed properly in a world where most people are barely listening while waiting for their turn to speak.
